Music Room

STK IIS offers a comprehensive music education program that encompasses both vocal music and instrumental music.

VOCAL MUSIC

The vocal music curriculum begins with an introduction to the seven notes of music, also known as sargam, which are represented in both Indian and Western musical notation (sa-re-ga-ma-pa-dha-ni-sa and do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do, respectively).

Through this program, students learn to sing in clean notes, develop their ability to sequence double, triple, and quadruple notes, and practice singing rhymes, songs, patriotic songs, prayers, inspirational songs, and more in Hindi, Sanskrit, and English. As they progress, students are also given the opportunity to compose their own songs.

The Vocal Music room is equipped with a keyboard and harmonium, which are used to accompany the school choir and regular song sessions across all grades. In addition, the room features a 2-in-1 stereo system that can play songs from the radio, CD, DVD, or internet. The room is also equipped with display boards that provide complementary information and support student learning.

To further support students’ practice outside of class, the music program offers email-based support. Students receive MS Word files of lyrics and audio files via email to help with home practice.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

STK IIS provides a comprehensive instrumental music education program that aims to introduce students to a variety of musical instruments such as wind, key, percussion, and string instruments. The curriculum begins with an understanding of the notes and rhythm of music, including the sargam or 7 notes of music, and progresses into playing familiar songs and tunes. The program also encourages students to create and compose their own music using everyday items such as spoons, pens, pencils, lunch boxes, and water bottles.

The school takes pride in its STK-IIS school band, consisting of both boys and girls, which delivers exceptional instrumental performances during important school events and programs.

The music room is equipped with a variety of instruments, including guitars, sitars, keyboards, jal tarang, tablas, dholaks, drum set, duff, congo, bongo, and side instruments such as tambourine, cymbals, shakers, and triangles.

The school’s music curriculum is mandatory from Grades 1 to 4, and from Grade 5 onwards, students can choose to specialize in exclusive dance, vocal music, or instrumental music.
