It is rightly said that “Music hath the charm to soothe the savage breast.”
Music education at STK IIS is two fold and incorporates – vocal music and instrumental music.
Vocal music is initiated with the sargam or 7 notes of music (sa-re-ga-ma-pa-dha-ni-sa) with orientation tot he English form as well (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do). Children learn to sing clean notes, sequencing with double-triple-quadruple notes, rhymes and songs, patriotic songs and prayers, inspirational songs inter alia, in Hindi, Sanskrit and in English. Children are also given the opportunity to compose their own songs at the higher levels.
The Vocal Music room is equipped with a keyboard and harmonium – used as accompaniment for the school choir and regular song sessions across all grades. It also has a 2 in 1 stereo system for songs that can be played from the radio or CD or DVD, access to internet to listen to songs from the internet, and display boards for complementary information. Email based support is available– MS Word files of lyrics and audio files are sent vide email for home practice.
The instrumental music curriculum aims at orienting the students to music through varied instruments – wind instruments, key instruments, percussion and string instruments. The curriculum begins with understanding the notes and rhythm of the music world (with the sargam or 7 notes of music) and progresses into playing familiar songs andd tunes. Children are also encouraged to create and compose their own music with every day items (spoons, pens, pencils, lunch boxes, water bottles, etc).
The school is proud of a STK-IIS school band (comprising boys and girls), which performs amazing instrumental renditions during important school events and programmes.
The music room is equipped with many pieces of the following – Guitars, Sitars, Keyboards, Jal Tarang, Tablas, Dholaks, Drum Set, Duff, Congo, Bongo, Side Instruments like Tambourine, Cymbals, Shakers and Triangles.
The music curriculum for both vocal and instrumental music is compulsory from Grades 1 to 4, with a choice for exclusive dance v/s exclusive vocal music v/s exclusive instrumental music from grade 5 up.
